Historical fiction meets fantasy is not everyone’s cup of tea, but the professional objections to the show filling my feeds and conversations are not about genre. They are about the presentation of the world in a negative light. Game of Thrones is the Norman Conquest through the War of the Roses with ice zombies and dragons but without grace.
Usually the critiques also mention the explicit content, which I relegate to a footnote now because that has not been an issue for the last few seasons. Once the directors realized that the story and characters won viewers and that the soft porn gimmick was not only unnecessary but also repulsed otherwise intrigued viewers, they dropped it.
