Matthew, as a once and future Texpat, I’m familiar with the need for American explainers — and my husband and I have done explaining gun culture many, many times. So for your future use and because neither of us have done significant time in China, so I would love your feedback, here’s mine. Pull quote is what I’m curious to know if you have observed in your expat life.

Thus, as a practical matter, while non-Americans usually approach the question of rights by looking for permission — by what leave does a citizen have the right to do some thing — Americans assume we have the right. We ask whether we gave the state leave to limit us.
