Your comment reminded me of a tangental expereince I am familiar with, that when a leftist learns someone is any version of right, they make mistaken assumptions about what that person believes. So I have had many friends over the years who will confess eyebrow raising beliefs assuming that I would understand.
You of course were talking about your ablity to be known as not of the left and being the confidant of other not-of-the-lefties who could not speak out or lose their income. Also common. Actually, I’m trying to get one of those gals to write here.
Not just the left, either. I too do not depend on my writing income so I can write more freely than some of my colleagues who have to pay more attention to unspoken editorial constraints. Policing on the right is different and lighter, but it still exists.
