We would be better off investing that time in improving the world another way. If John wanted to vote for Trump because he’s pro-life, then a more efficient way to reduce abortions would be to have meaningful conversations with a few friends who are pregnant and considering whether or not to keep the baby. If Jane was considering voting for Clinton because she wanted to reduce poverty, then a better way to tackle the problem might be to pick up a few extra shifts at work and donate the money to a charity.
And we might consider that most of the forgoing is not true — or is far less true — of local voting. In cities, elections are often swung by a few hundred votes, and occasionally, by less than 100. Reading up on local issues and candidates and encouraging local turnout is consequential in a way that reading about DC antics is not.
